Effective Financial Tools for Scientific Managers

This was Jim’s first management book, published in 1994. It included many real-life examples, and was used as a textbook in Jim’s management classes at Penn State University.

It is a book of general business principles, written to address the need for “common language” between people on the business and scientific sides of a company. It was directed mainly to the needs of new managers who had risen from the scientific departments of a company and were unfamiliar with business and financial terminology and processes.

The expanded and updated version became The Executive MBA for Engineers and Scientists.
